My name is Shalom Powell (maiden-name Fielding). I grew up in Kennewick and went to Kennewick High and played sports year-round. I sustained knee injuries along the way which led me to my path and passion in physical therapy. I graduated from BYU-Utah in 2008 with my bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and then graduated from UNLV with my Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2011. In the midst of PT school, I married Chris, my kind, patient husband who started his own real estate business after getting his MBA while I was getting my PT degree. For 11 years, I worked at Hughes Physical Therapy where my colleagues are still near and dear to my heart.
We struggled with fertility issues and have 2 sweet boys who are 5 years apart. My first boy came to us early with an emergency C-section at 34 weeks with intrauterine growth restriction and weighed 2 lbs 5 oz. We all survived a 7 week NICU stay including a life flight. What a journey.
My second son has provided a completely different journey. After preparing with multiple birthing classes, he was born vaginally weighing 8 lbs 14 oz. I sustained a 3rd degree tear and developed symptomatic 2nd degree pelvic organ prolapse. This took me from doing half ironman triathlons before I got pregnant to not being able to go for a short walk without feeling symptomatic. With the help of my pelvic physical therapist, continuing education, and persistent effort, I have worked my way back up to triathlons again and still have a goal of an Ironman
This journey has made me passionate about improving pelvic health and women’s health in general through movement and fitness, using an approach without internal examination. I continue to love orthopedics and am eager to help exercise enthusiasts, recreational runners, mothers running after their children, and any woman who dreads “cold season” so leaking is no longer their norm.
I look forward to working with you and not limiting you. I will educate and empower you, and help you find your own resilience and rebirth.
